Abstract: We discuss problems regarding residual properties of free groups, the modular group, and free products of finite groups. We show how a probabilistic approach, combined with some algebraic geometry and other tools, can be used to solve these problems. Applications to profinite groups will also be discussed, as well as some open problems.
