"Ricci Flow and three-dimensional manifolds"

Abstract: This talk will discuss the recent advances due to Perelman in using a non-linear version of heat flow (the Ricci flow) to study the topology of three-dimensional manifolds. A discussion of the qualitative nature of singularity development in these flows as well as how the analytic and geometric results imply the topological consequences such as the proof of the Poincare Conjecture.

Light refreshments will be served in the faculty lounge at 3:30.
