Abstract: In this talk we shall outline a recent direction of research interrelating symplectic geometry and algebraic geometry. We shall explain how methods and ideas from symplectic geometry can be used to study classical algebro-geometric problems on hyperplane sections and degenerations of algebraic varieties.
